The diode is usually located next to a connector as a bulge in the wire. Locate the diode and check for signs of heat damage, replace it if necessary. If it seems O.K. then disconnect the wire at the connector going into the alternator. Set the VOM on the ohm setting. Always touch the meter probes together to be sure that it is set right.
